Chief Derick Miller is an accomplished policing professional, serving as the eleventh Chief of Police in Irving, Texas since May 31, 2022. With a career spanning over three decades, Chief Miller’s journey began in 1992 as a reserve police officer with the Carrollton Police Department. Through hard work and dedication, he climbed the ranks, ultimately being appointed as Police Chief in November 2017.
Education has always been a priority for Chief Miller. He holds a Master’s and Bachelor’s degree in Criminology and Criminal Justice from the University of Texas at Arlington, as well as a Graduate Certificate from the University of Virginia. Chief Miller’s thirst for knowledge extends beyond academia, as he has successfully completed prestigious programs such as the F.B.I. National Academy, PERF’s Senior Management Institute of Policing, and the Institute of Law Enforcement Administration’s Management College. Additionally, he holds a Master Peace Officer’s Certificate from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement.
Chief Miller’s expertise in the field of policing has led him to share his knowledge with others. He currently serves as an Adjunct Professor of Criminology at the University of Texas at Arlington, where he shares his knowledge and experiences with aspiring professionals in the study of criminology and criminal justice. Furthermore, he actively contributes to the policing community in various roles, including serving as a Regional Director for the Texas Police Chief’s Association and as the chair of the Executive Advisory Board of the Caruth Police Institute at UNT Dallas. Chief Miller also dedicates his time to the International Chief’s of Police Professional Standards, Ethics, and Image committee, ensuring the highest standards of integrity and professionalism within the field. And most recently, Chief Miller was asked to serve on the Board of Directors for the International Chief’s of Police.
In his pursuit to continuously improve policing practices, Chief Miller is a founding member of “The Curve,” which is a distinguished group of thoughtful police chiefs and sheriffs led by Simon Sinek. This collective aims to transform the culture of policing, fostering positive change and innovation within the law enforcement community.
